As this is my first post, I felt it would be best to start with something that is affecting people in my country right now.
Canada's prime minister Steven Harper has always been known as a Christian follower who believed in the rules laid down by the lord. Most people expect that from a member of the Conservative party. People voted for the party because of how badly the Liberals messed up last time with all our money, and felt that perhaps the opposition would do better.
My mother and I, both being very pro-feminist, grew up hearing stories about how women in all religions were suppressed. My father, on the other hand, didn't believe that it would happen ever again and that we were perfectly fine with the conservatives in control of the federal government. He was right, but now, with Harper's new anti-abortion ideas, is regretting ever voting for him.
Steven Harper recently announced that he did not agree with the use of abortion and wished for women to stop using it. Personally I don't think he understands at all what might have happened to the children, had they been born. Many of these unborn babies would have been raised (or not at all) by a mother who had most likely never wanted him or her in the first place. They would grow up hated and beat down on for their entire childhoods. Or they might have been adopted, but would eventually know that they had parents that hadn't wanted them. Then again, this may not have happened, but it still could have.
But many people do not agree. People across the world have come to Canada to cheer for Harper's ideals. They call people who use or preform abortions baby killers and sinners. They claim that those children deserved to live.
I personally believe that abortion is overused. Women too often use it after they make the mistake of having unprotected sex and do not wish to have the responsibility of a child. But there are also people who never even wanted to have that sex. Too often a woman is raped. Should that woman have to raise the child of some man who forced her into sexual abuse? And how would the child react to finding out that he or she was the child of a rapist? A person should not have to deal with it.
So in conclusion. Steven Harper cannot force women to keep a child that they will not or wont be able to raise. He is presuming that these people are killing the children for unjust reasons and that they are able to keep them, or else they would have never had sex in the first place. He may make it so that there will be women who will be reminded forever of one of the worst moments of their lives.
Think about it.
